When were not at the game, were watching on TV, and broadcasters shape the way we see baseball. This season, Sporting News will be reviewing the work done in booths acro s MLB. This time its the New York Yankees on the YES Network.

Now, this series already has reviewed a Yankees broadcast on YES, but there are several different combinations of announcers who do Yankees games. Regular play-by-play man Michael Kay was not part of Thursday nights proceedings, allowing Ken Singleton to move over from his usual analyst spot, with David Cone along for his commentary. Cone got high marks here for his work alongside Kay in a May broadcast that was otherwise disappointing. With a fellow former All-Star as his partner rather than the miscast Kay (a fine radio analyst before moving to TV, and a good host on both his sports talk show and the interview program CenterStage), expectations for this duo are high.

Weve already seen the dynamic of former position player and former pitcher work well with Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow in San Francisco, and to unique effect Sammy Sosa Jersey with Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone in Chicago. While they have yet to be reviewed here, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling are part of one of the most succe sful three-man booths youll ever see in combination with Gary Cohens play-by-play on Mets broadcasts. So, here we go with Singleton and Cone.

As Derek Jeter comes to the plate with one out in the top of the first inning, Singleton notes that on Wednesday night, the New York shortstop had his 999th career multi-hit game. That leads into the 1-2 pitch from T.J. House.

Singleton: If he can get two hits here tonight, number 1,000. Nice round number. Little roller, by the mound gonna be a tough play! Santana FLIPS, and Jeter is gonna be safe! Well see how they score Victor Caratini Jersey that. It should probably be a base hit, and Jeter is halfway to a multi-hit game. Its gonna be an infield single.

Cone: Indeed it is. Tough play for a lefty, as you fall off toward third. Hes gotta get over there, and he does break in time, but a little circuitous route, and that is not the way you teach it. (The replay shows House and Jeter in what proves to be, fortunately, a harmle s collision.) Very dangerous. T.J. House finds himself right in the line. Derek Jeter runs up his back, and that couldve ended up a lot worse than it did.

Singleton updates Jeters career hit total to 3,404, noting that he is now 15 hits behind Carl Yastrzemski on the all-time list.

If there is one phrase heard doing this series of reviews that stands out, it is Vin Scullys simple description of the broadcasters task: Our job is to give you information. Singletons narration of the play and the update of historical context achieve that mi sion statement, as does Cones work in highlighting where House went wrong on the play as Jacoby Ellsbury comes Cole Hamels Jersey to the plate, Cone suggests that perhaps House believed he had a chance to field Jeters ground ball, but it was already past him.

Singleton does a good job of keeping up with the pitch-by-pitch action House delivers, and its in there for a called strike. Fastball, and thats about it, topping out for House at about 91. while also providing room for Cone to speak. Listening carefully to type out what hes saying, its comes acro s that Singleton sometimes stumbles en route to finding the words he wants to use, but within the flow of the game and conversation, its not awkward at all.

GIVE ME LIBERTY

For instance, theres this on Asdrubal Cabrera as he bats in the bottom of the first: The first pitch to him is poured in there for a strike. Cabrera, usually sure-handed, hes made 14 errors this year, which is second most in the league. Josh Donaldson of the Oakland As, the All-Star, Josh Donaldson, has made more hes made 15. Theres another pitch for a called strike, and its 0-2. One season a couple of years ago, where it seemed like every night Cabrera was making Carlos Zambrano Jersey a highlight play, flipping behind his back, throwing from his rump to first base to get people out. Solid shortstop. That pitch is low and inside, 1-2.

Theres a verb mi sing somewhere, but nobody is going to mi s the point that Singleton is making he is getting the information acro s. After that pitch to move the count to 1-2, Singleton takes a breath and lets Cone go a bit.

Cervelli cant believe it, Cone says. He almost did the Statue of Liberty back there before he threw the ball back. Heres the swingback two-seamer that looks like its right there. Watch Cervelli, hell kind of reach up like Roman Gabriel the old Statue of Liberty play by a quarterback. Gotta wait for the running back to come back behind and pick it up. Obviously, Cervelli thinks this is a strike.

Singleton: Theres a throw over to first James Norwood Jersey , to check on Kipnis.

Cone: Did I drop a Roman Gabriel, Statue of Liberty? The old Statue of Liberty play!

Singleton: The Rams arent even in Los Angeles anymore! The 1-2 pitch, and there is called strike three. Cabrera caught looking. So, a walk and a strikeout to open it up for David Phelps.

Cone: Well, this is cla sic Phelps. From corner to corner. This time, instead of the swingback two-seamer, its the backdoor cutter. Right to the edge. Thats why Phelps gets a lot of his strikeouts looking, because they look like theyre balls, and then at the last minute, they move and catch the corners. Thats his style. Hes a movement specialist, and when hes right, hes gonna get a lot of called third strikes.

Singleton: Yeah, 72 strikeouts on the year, and 39 of them are called third strikes. No other pitcher has more than 50 percent of his strikeouts on called third strikes.

Information, a little bit of a tangent, remaining in touch with the game, a chuckle, back to strong analysis, and more information. This is the blueprint you want to follow, and onsidering that Singleton and Cone dont get to work together very much, their chemistry is astoundingly good while doing it.

SCOUTS HONOR

The first time that this series looked at Cones work, he talked about Wins Above Replacement during a Yankees-Mets game to put David Ron Santo Jersey Wrights place among the games best into context. This time, the former pitcher shows his attention to developments in the way that people think about the game while delivering a scouting report on Jason Kipnis, a sponsored piece that usually means its time to tune out while pablum is delivered in relation to a few bullet points on the screen.

Cone: Lets take a look at the Jeep hitters scouting report on Jason Kipnis, and he was a breakout last year, a 2013 All-Star -- .284, 17 home runs, 84 RBIs. Much different this year
