Last year was an exciting year for Grand Seiko.
With the original White Birch Hi-Beat, the SLGH005, the brand officially announced its Series 9 design (though the watch appears to have been quietly launched earlier), and its superb dial quickly became a fan favorite. This piece brings the escapement from GS years ago into a more affordable and unrestricted production model. So it was no surprise when this watch was chosen as the Men’s Watch of the Year by the Grand Prix de la Horlogerie de Genève and HODINKEE’s own Logan Baker as his favorite new watch for 2021. Six months later, the brand solved the worries of GS Spring Drive fans by introducing the new 9RA2 movement with a 5-day power reserve in the SLGA007 and SLGA008, moving the power reserve to the movement side of the replica watches for men.
So it may come as no surprise that the Grand Seiko “White Birch” Spring Drive Calibre 9RA2, the SLGA009 from now on, is launching today. Just as the Series 9's design evolved from the brand's historic 44GS case, this watch is a logical continuation of a brand built on meticulous revisions. With the exception of the Zaratsu polished Series 9 case, the distinctive bark-like dial, truncated hands and chunky fluted markers return, undamaged by the power reserve indicator behind the sapphire caseback. There we find the most unique change: the new "brushed" 9RA2 movement.
High beats and Spring Drive's "White Birch" timepieces will officially make up the new Evolution 9 collection starting in February.
When I think of Grand Seiko, two things that come to mind are snowflakes and birch trees - natural elements that remind me of home. Of the more than 5.2 million trees in New York, there are only 371 Betula papyrifera, or paper (white) birches. But as it happens, the press release for this watch is before I'm staring at the city's first snow of 2022 - snowflakes, baby! - So I left my apartment to find those trees.
The closest birch on East 57th Street is surrounded by buildings, portable toilets and scaffolding, and its slender branches are still piled with piles of fresh snow. Granted, it's a far cry from the forests of Shinshu, the idyllic home of the Grand Seiko Spring Drive studio and the inspiration for the birch bark dial. Amid the hustle and bustle of the street and the festive lights lingering on nearby trees, the tree lacks its signature curly white bark and doesn't stand out unless you're looking for it. But it still feels special to see it and know what it is.
This is my impression of finding Grand Seiko in the wild, and I mean the best way possible. There is nothing obtrusive about the GS. Instead, you'll feel extra special and captivating when you experience it in person; a noise-cancelling luxury replica watches.
This was especially true of last year's SLGH005 White Birch Hi-Beat, which earned almost universal acclaim, especially for a design that was somewhere between sporty and elegant, and set the tone for the GS going forward. It's hard to see how a watch that is similar in many ways could be less successful.
Photos don't really do Grand Seiko justice, and I still remember my crush when I first saw Zaratsu do it in person. As someone who grew up looking at watch movements rather than dials, I hope I'll be a little surprised when I see the frosted 9RA2 in person. The "frost" finish on the movement is conspicuous in the press photos, but just as Jack was eager to see the birch bark dial for the full effect in his initial review, I needed to see the movement in person. On paper, it would make sense to match the cool tones of the birch bark dial and blue second hand to the matte movement, which I imagine would (perhaps counterintuitively) visually warm the movement for good balance.replica Patek Philippe Complications watches
