The Raystown fort had been developed by a small grouping of 800 soldiers who moved in front of the main military, specifically to locate a position to build a fort as a source depot. Raystown had been a remote and deserted trading article at that time. Forbes was sick all through much of the journey of hacking through the wilderness and had to be carried on a litter. Still, he survived to accomplish the task. His path eventually became known as Forbes Path or Forbes Trail.

Forbes Path left the French at Fort Duquesne in a dilemma. Today they would need to defend both this new road and Braddock's Path from the south. Only 12 miles from Fort Duquesne, Forbes' soldiers were spotted. The weaker French soldiers eventually burnt Fort Duquesne and abandoned it.
