Regenerating cane land, naturally

Cane Farm Regeneration

Earlier this year, a local cane grower learned of our products and their ability to regenerate soil and offered us an opportunity to trial their success on his land. Faced with the ever increasing costs of farming and lack of increase in return, the farmer was curious to see if the use of XLR8®Bio / HumiSoil® in conjunction with other regenerative methods, was enough to convert 0.2ha block into a capable growing media for his cane. Having not successfully grown cane on this particular patch in over 30 years, we accepted his offer and began prepping the site for regeneration.  Xlr8 Bio

Located on the highway between Port Douglas and Mossman, we took soil samples on this small block and sent to ALS for analysis. The farmer went through with his disc to loosen up the soil where we then applied 10 tonnes of HumiSoil® and 150lts of XLR8®Bio. These application rates far exceed the recommended amount but given the soils lack of health, we decided to give it all it’s got.

A few weeks later, we’ve planted eight different green manure crops from at least 4 different plant species. Sunn hemp, sunflower, cowpea, mustard, lupin, buckwheat and rye. Chosen for their nitrogen fixing and pest / disease eradicating abilities, these plants will aid the biology in XLR8®Bio / HumiSoil® to prep the soil for cane.

We’ll leave this block for the next 4 – 5 months before discing the matter back into the soil. Our farmer will then plant cane and this time next year, we’ll have cane growing a couple of feet tall and a case study for growers of cane on how they too can spot regenerate their “dead” patches on their land. Or better yet, switch to this regenerative approach across their whole farm, saving them money and increasing sugar yeilds.
