China's First Large-Tow Carbon Fiber Domestic Production Line Was Successfully Completed

During the first half of this year, China's first large-tow carbon fiber domestic production line was successfully finished. This line can produce more than a thousand tons of carbon fiber each year. This is a great achievement for China's carbon fibre and CFRP Tube industry and it has made it possible to develop more high-end products.

Toray's carbon fibre supply in China has decreased since the beginning of 2021

During the past couple of years, Toray's carbon fibre supply in China has decreased. It is estimated that the company's output capacity has decreased by 1.9 percent.

The company has set aside 55 billion yen to lift the output capacity. It is also planning to build a new plant in Ishikawa, northwest of Tokyo. Toray is one of the largest manufacturers of synthetic fibre in the world. It has plants in France, Japan, the U.S., and Mexico.

The company has recently introduced a new product. The new product is a prepreg, which is a sheet of carbon fiber impregnated with resin. The new product can shorten the production cycle by 2 to 30 percent.

The company plans to invest $455 million to boost carbon fibre output. This will increase its overall production capacity to 50,000 tons per year by 2025. The company expects the global nameplate carbon fibre demand to reach 201,000 metric tonnes by the end of the forecast period.

Shanxi Tiancefu Technology Co., Ltd. has 5 single-line thousand-ton carbon fiber production lines

Xining, the capital of Western Qinghai province, recently launched a 10,000-ton carbon fiber production line. This project will expand the competitiveness of Chinese carbon fiber overseas. The investment is two billion yuan (US$320 million), and the base is expected to be completed in May 2019. It is the first phase of a larger project that will total 800 acres.

The site produces oxidized fibers, including electrically conductive variants, as well as high performance brake discs. It also produces woven and nonwoven filters. It is a joint venture with Brembo.

The process begins with a low-temperature furnace. The precursor fiber is spun. The resulting fiber has a diameter of 5 to 10 microns. After spinning, it is oxidized. The carbonized fiber loses volume and weight. It is then conditioned. The lignin must be treated before further processing.

The site belongs to Business Unit Carbon Fibers and CNC carbon fiber tube, which manufactures both oxidized and tailored fibers. The company has been involved in the industry for more than ten years.

Surface treatment of carbon fiber

During the last year, the China National Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) successfully completed the trial production of its 48K large tow carbon fiber. The company's new type of high-strength fiber material has excellent corrosion resistance and strength seven to nine times higher than steel. In addition, the product has specific gravity less than one fourth of steel. This material is widely used in aerospace, body vehicle manufacturing, rail transit raw materials, and oil and gas pipelines.

In the past, China's carbon fiber industrial supply chain relied heavily on imports. But the Sinopec project will bring a strong impetus to the domestic carbon fiber industry. It will also provide an effective contribution to China's industrial manufacturing.

The 3.5 billion yuan project will produce 12,000 tons of 48K large tow carbon fiber. It will become the first large-tow industrialized carbon fiber production line in China. The project has also won the first prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

High sizing percent is used to facilitate weaving

Known as "black gold", large tow carbon fiber and Carbon Fiber Sheet has become a popular choice for composite materials applications. It is used in the manufacturing of high-performance components, such as wind energy turbine blades and solar power systems. These materials are corrosion resistant and have excellent mechanical properties.

The first domestic large tow carbon fiber production line was implemented by China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SPC). It is expected to become the first carbon fiber industrial base in China. The facility will produce 12,000 tons of large tow carbon fibers annually. It is expected to reduce China's reliance on imports and facilitate the transformation of China's industrial power.

The tow size is a significant factor in the cost of carbon fibre. Studies indicate a gradual decrease in the cost per kg as the tow size increases. The main inputs for large tow carbon fibre are rayon, petroleum pitch, and polyacrylonitrile. The raw material cost is one of the major constraints in the mass market application of these materials.
